As reported in a tweet head of Android at Google Andy Rubin (Andy Rubin), the Christmas weekend - 24 and December 25 - has been activated a record number of mobile devices based on operating system Android, it amounted to 3.7 million. Apparently, a large percentage of these devices has been received as a gift (well, or purchased as a gift to yourself).

For comparison, just recently reported 700,000 Android activations per day, but last weekend the figure was more than twice as high. Of course, it is unlikely in the near future we can expect these records: after the Christmas and New Year holidays are traditionally a lull follows.

In addition, during the Christmas weekend, apparently, was activated about the same number of devices based on iOS, since, according to research firm Flurry, number of activations iOS and Android devices December 25 amounted to 6.8 million.

patents are the main reason for the planned purchase of Motorola

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

The European Commission has asked Google for more information on the planned acquisition of Motorola Mobility from $ 12.5 billion. A decision on the deal has been postponed.

This confirms a spokeswoman for the European Commission (EC) at PC World. The request for additional documentation implies that Dealin of January 10 is not met and the deal before that date may be approved. A new deadline is only after Google announced the documents submitted.

Information is missing
What is missing from the information that Google has provided the Commission did not say. However the spokeswoman said that that data is essential to properly evaluate the acquisition. Google acknowledges the request of the Committee and stressed that it is a routine procedure.

The search giant is “confident that the committee will come to the conclusion that the acquisition is good for competition”. Google promised to continue close cooperation with the committee.

Patents
It is not the first time that Google should provide more information about the deal. The U.S. authorities made a request for additional information on the various implications of the deal. Google announced in August at Motorola want to take over . The deal would focus on the telephone patents that Motorola, which will use Google Android to defend against patent threats from Microsoft, Apple and others.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt denied earlier this month that patents are the main reason for the planned purchase of Motorola. It would be rather a personal wish of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who always wanted to do something with hardware. Schmidt said that the huge patent portfolio does help. Google is that patents only defensive purposes, he promised.
